Description
Somloi Vandor Teraszok Juhfark is an exquisite, lean, and mineral rich, dry volcanic white wine from Somló-Hill, north-west of the Lake Balaton. Somló is a wine region most known for its volcanic terroirs. Juhfark translates to ‘sheeps tail’ & simply refers to the shape of the clusters to that resemble sheeps tail. The bunches are elongated and have a cylinder-like shape, rather than being short, wide or chunky. Juhfark is not only a native white grape variety in the Somló wine region, but actually one of the oldest of such classic varieties in Hungary. It is also considered a high maintenance variety to grow, but with some talent and the right weather conditions, Juhfark can produce some outstanding, zesty wines with fantastic ageing potential.
Winemaker Tamas Kis takes pride in using strictly organic methods on his 4.5 hectare vineyards. The grapes were hand harvested from a single vineyard called Teraszok (means ‘Terraces’), with specifically trained bush-vines. Fermentation follows with wild yeasts, then an 8 month maturation in barrels. Only 500 bottles were made of this single vineyard wine.
Juhfark Teraszok leads with citrusy aromas, and green apples, on a backdrop of high minerality. An elegant & lively wine with a saline finish.
This Juhfark suits very well with medium spiced dishes such as Feta cheese and beans on toast, glass noodles with tofu and coriander, grilled white fish, sushi, or chicken and leek with pasta in a creamy sauce.
